Mapping the distribution of brain metal irons in emotional and motivational disorders
Prof Qi Han and Prof Ti-Fei Yuan, Shanghai Jiao Tong University
Emotional and motivational disorders, such as drug addiction, anxiety, and depression, affect millions of people worldwide. These conditions can make daily life very difficult and often come with high relapse rates. Scientists are now exploring whether imbalances in certain metals in the brain—like iron, zinc, and copper—might play a role in these disorders. These metals are essential for brain function, helping with communication between brain cells and maintaining emotional balance. When their levels are disrupted, it could contribute to symptoms like mood swings and addictive behaviors.
Our research aims to study how these metals are distributed in the brains of people with these disorders. We also want to understand why these imbalances occur and how they might be linked to the development of the conditions. This is important because some drugs designed to adjust metal levels in the body could potentially be used to treat emotional and motivational disorders if our findings support this idea. By uncovering these connections, we hope to pave the way for better treatments, helping people recover faster and improve their quality of life.
